Shapes, patterns, graphing and rocks!

Another great week full of learning took place this week. Below are some quick descriptions of some of this weeks activities. Also-a quick reminder that ALL trip forms should be returned by now and paid online! If you haven't done so yet please return them by Monday OR let us know if your child is unable to attend. The trip is on October 29th and once all forms are back we will notify you if you are randomly selected as a volunteer. IMPORTANT reminder...there is no school for students this coming Friday before Thanksgiving.
Our students are simply in love with shapes, rocks and patterns so we decided to focus on those things this week. Above is a photo of our students using Lego/Duplo to create patterns by colour matching. Some created simple ABAB patterns and others decided to use ABBABBA patterns. A few also used horizontal and vertical movements of the pieces to create different patterns.

We also continued to use our special gems to create many interesting patterns. Some friends decided to create letters and words with the gems. We have some great thinkers who even tried to make shapes (triangle, square and circle below).
We received a special rocks and minerals kit which contained 50 kinds of unique treasures. This inspired a great number matching activity and a great art activity which motivated students to use words they have learned to describe what they see. Most of their oral descriptions were scribed.

Thank you to everyone who was able to take their children out on their rock hunts. We have begun the preparation of our little project which we hope to share with the grade 4s since they have a rocks and minerals unit.
Last week we told you that students discovered that they couldn't make circles with sticks or things that had straight lines. They came up with suggestions for items they could use to make circles. Above you see some of their ideas and how they used them to make circles.
Our love for shapes continues so we had a challenge for the boys and girls to build towers with 2D shapes! They quickly learned that they need thicker shapes to create good sturdy towers. This brought on learning about various 3D shapes and later we played a fun hide and seek sorting game with them. After that we also began learning about graphs.
The students were also inspired to use the shapes they learned about to build new towers.

The gems that the students love were also used along with other materials to learn more about letters.

We will continue to work on all of the above ideas this coming week. Enjoy
the weekend. Oh and how could we forget...we LOVE library day! Which is TUESDAYS this week it was switched up because the librarian was sick Tuesday. Sorry for any confusion that caused.

PS-This weather is confusing we know! However, please remember to dress your children in warm clothing! Layers are always great!!
