We had a fantastic walk today that sparked plenty of amazing conversation in our classroom. Our students sure are learning how to think outside of the box! We are very proud of all our learners (a few students are away but here in spirit).
First, a few photos from our walk...
We did a great job hunting for bugs and working together.
A few students insisted we take some macro photos with our special lens and we made neat discoveries because of them. The first was the picture below...take a look at the bug below do you see anything special to the left?
You got it, it's a REFLECTION. After analyzing what type of bug this is (we still aren't sure) one student said this is a reflection another said it is a shadow. We talked about the difference and we learned it is infact a reflection. We discussed where else we may see reflections and we learned about many places we can see ourselves. One friend told us in a spoon your reflection is upside down. We went on a spoon hunt at lunch and found a spoon and they were right! We had lots of fun looking at our upside down faces.
However, we weren't sure why one side of the spoon it was right side up and the other upside down.
We decided to look it up and we started learning that the inside of the spoon is concave and the outside is convex. Concave meant it curves in convex meant it curves out. We learned about the light and it makes the image all goofy as it reflects differently on a concave surfaces and the light goes bonkers and everywhere. What a fun thing to learn!
Outside we also explore shadows and learned that our shadow direction changes in the sun is in different spots. We traced shadow towers and our bodies.
Finally, your turn to play our guessing game...take a look at some of these items can you guess what they are?
Ask your children for help :-)
