Week 2 continued (a few more from a fun week)

Reminder to parents/guardians,
Year Two students bring in your challenge folders this week 😊. We can't wait to see what you did with the sight words!

Thursday-we will be running for Terry Fox (donations can be made online as specified in an email sent out by our principal). We ask ALL students to be dressed in active gear and have outdoor running shoes on their feet Thursday.

Challenge in classroom:
Can you make numbers with our toys?
Some students got very creative!
Patterning continues to be a favourite activity too.
Some of us make letters with our toys.
The year two students have started using letter sounds and sight words to try to write sentences.
We continue to wonder about little critters we see outside. We really enjoyed exploring under and around our "cottages" (that's what the students call our portables).
(We also found interesting flowers we liked).
The Dot presentation was UNREAL and had us dancing and clapping to one of our favourite stories. The message in the book about "Making YOUR Mark" is a great one. A great way to follow up international dot day last week.
Some of our monkeys wanted to practise adding on the small white board. Take a look...
Hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend. See you tomorrow!

Week two 👍🏼 BUGZzzzzz and Appleee Fun!

Patterns, apples, and BUGZzzzzz (gross)..
Our students have been extremely fascinated by insects and little creatures outside so we thought why not get some pets of our own! Check out our little friends...
Can you guess what kind of little critter this is? One student guessed grasshopper...
Pictures, book talks, and magnifying glasses are really fun ways to help us explore these little critters habitat.
We played a guessing game and learned out legs, antennae, wings, breathing holes and many other great parts!
Sorting bugs according to their parts was also fun.

Let's not forget we had a BUG HUNT!
A great way to apply what we learned. By the way, seeing the excitement in your children's eyes as they learned to count legs, describe anntanea as shorter or longer, explain wing length, talk aboutbug  features, and explore is a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do. Our job isn't a job to us we just love to see this learning going on and we love learning with all of them.
We learned about patterning this week and we decided to use apples, magnets, beads, and other classroom manipulatives to show what we learned.
We have also started a fun Apple inquiry with various liquids and air. In a small lesson we first explored what each liquid with apple in it smelled like, some brave volunteers used their sense of taste to taste the liquids and describe them, and others used their sense of touch. We had many neat observations. Our liquids turned out to be vinegar, water, and oil and our empty jar was air (which we also tried tasting, sniffing , and touching all around us). We recorded pictures of what the apples look like on day one and we will compare them in a week.
Take a look at some of our descriptions on the apple jars.
We finished creating our calendar! Everyone helped to write the numbers and words. The challenge was fun.
Our reading corner is a fun place to check out books.

(Oh yes...some of us also worked on drawing our favourite critters and learning how to write their names).

Don't forget tomorrow is curriculum night at 6:30! We kindly ask that parents/guardians attend without their children. We will begin in the gym.

What a FUN week full of learning!

We have had an incredible week and to top it all off today was International Dot Day! We had so much fun with everyone here. Check out all our learning...
Using the white board and magnetic manipulatives to work on counting and numbers. Students learned to count and recount to correct themselves.
Everyone wanted to problem solve and work together to build a cottage.
We are learning that it is okay to share all our toys with boys and girls and it is so nice to see everyone using our toys together.
Girls can build and boys can use our pet shops. They are for everyone.
Chalk was used outside to inspire counting and writing. Here we see one of our students trying to write the entire alphabet and than he practiced saying the letters. On the right is one of our students who drew hearts and we counted three times to make sure we counted right. She drew 42! Wow that's a lot of work.
Sorting on the light table and on the carpet has become a great and fun math activity. This has been completely initiated by our amazing students.
We also learned about colours and made fun media inspired photo collages.
Let's not forget the media inspired smiles (lol).
We also worked on our names by using fun paper cut outs to try to recreate them.
Some of us are starting to enjoy BUGS! Perhaps a fun bug inquiry is in the works...wait and see.

We did many other fun things to help us learn. However, DOT day today was super duper fun and the best part of the week!
Today was Dot Day and we read this wonderful story...(there will also be an assembly on it next week).
This story inspired counting, art, and writing. Check out all the fun we had...
Creating DOT hands.
Using classroom materials to create fun circle DOT art.
Creating a group DOT mural (taped up to leave white dot once covered in paint).
Writing our names and creating our own DOT marks.
We even helped our new principal become a part of DOT DAY.
Thank you Mr. Chininea for allowing us to dotify you.
We also were in the dot spirit and many of us dressed for the occasion.
We explored the outdoors and made tiny, small, medium, large, and extra large dots.
We also did a circle/dot scavenger hunt in the classroom. Overall, a GREAT week with all of us together for the first time!
We hope you enjoyed the post.

P.S we are still hoping for any spare book donations if you have books you do not need/use anymore for our reading corner.
We really love to look at books.
