Before reading this blog which is about our students reflection on peace and remembrance I think it is important to mention that we should all pray for the people of Paris this weekend. Especially since our students ambitiously built Eiffle Towers and talked about what peace is. Please-Pray for Peace.
We began our journey by showing our students the Peace sign hand made out of pipe cleaners and beads. We asked them what they think it is. Answers varied from guessing it may be a steering wheel, a broken cross or just a circle until one student said it is a symbol. This lead us into how it is called a peace symbol and how it is used to remind us of peace. We than began a conversation about "what is peace?". Below you will see some of the student ideas on our chart paper.
After discussing what we thought Peace was we watched a video about what other students think peace is and read a story which made us want to create our own drawings to show what we think is peace. We love Todd Parr books in our classroom.
Parents coming in next week will have an opportunity to visit a writing/art center with your child and create your own continuation of the Todd Parr book. We cannot wait to see what you and your children come up with.
A link to the video we watched is below:
Some of us worked on our very own special Peace signs.
We also read a poem about Poppies and learned that poppies are used to remember soldiers who helped us have a peaceful Canada.
Some of our monkeys decided they wanted to create their own poppies and others really wanted to draw them on our windows. We also did a fun craft that shows the poppies in the field.
Our Rememberance Day assembly was wonderful and continued to help us reflect about Peace. We also loved learning how to use texture to create beautiful art of poppies in Flanders Field.
What else did we do this week you ask...
Well, some of us continued to work on our names and we did this by using PASTA!
We are sure you were wondering what all those bottle caps were being used for? Here we have a student using them to work on some writing/letter sounds/reading.
Many of us continue to enjoy using our shapes to build new tower creations. A cool challenge awaits our avid builders. How many towers will tweet our recreations? So far we are a hit with the CN tower!
Some of our students are also continuing to love making patterns and some have been very eager to use classroom bins to show off their number skills. We have some very curious students who are so eager to learn. Often when we say we are putting out new ideas and centers it is almost a race and they cannot wait! We look forward to sharing their eagerness and great spirits with all of you next week at observations.
PS creative costume designs have been developing with new materials...Try to guess which game this creation is from?
Renovations on our home have begun...
First step-painting!
We have also been tweeting with St. Andrews FDK students and we will be Skyping with them this coming week so they could answer questions we made!
They asked us about Ash Trees and we have made many new questions for them.
Finally, what fun would a school week be without a few bundled up teacher SELFIES!
Enjoy your weekend!Love, Mrs. Latus and Ms. Flor
