Inspired by our trip

A busy week so far inspired by our trip.
Just a quick update:
*Yes we still need bottle caps.
*We now have enough little cars for the activity we have been planning.
*We will be starting our Rockin' Readers program after parent observation week in November (notes will be going home in the next week or so about observations).
*You all ROCKED it with the donations for food and clothing drive-thank you!!
*Go Leafs Go? Come on help them win some more (Mrs. Latus is feeling lucky).

So let us check out what has been going on the past few days.
Owls, rocks, seeds OH MY!!

Owls have been the talk of Kinderland. We learned about how they have talons as toes, tufts on ears, and a beak for a nose in a little reading. We looked for the letter O in this reading and later tried to encourage students to find even more great letters. We also worked on a beautiful craft that was a HOOT!! Can you see all the creative patterns and shapes we used?
We had two friends visit us from the 5/6 class and they helped some of our monkeys finish up some writing from last week. They were great helpers.
Our trip also inspired writing about the trip which was so much fun. We used photos and asked students to tell us what was in the picture. We than helped guide their writing based on their abilities.
We continue to work on letters and new ways to make letters. Here was a fun play dough center. Some of us LOVE making our names.
We decided to do a science experiment with some of our left over seeds from Halloween. We have planted the seeds and labeled them to see how many each cup holds. We will now see which ones grow and use measurement to determine how tall they get and how many sprouts form.
We have been learning about the life cycle of the pumpkin and we read a book about a tiny seed to learn more about what seeds need to survive. We learned that water and sunlight are very important to help our seeds grow so now we make sure we place them closer to the window.
Seed MATH!
On our trip some students found tee pees and at school they were given tape, pipe cleaners and Popsicle sticks and challenged to use their problem solving skills to build their own tee pees. They received no further guidance and we asked them to use their big problem solving skills to figure out a special way to make them. We are starting to learn about structures this way and how we can support them to stand up in a tee pee formation. Some ideas worked and others didn't but we will keep on working towards making tall tee pees.
Hope you enjoyed this update!

An ADDITION to blog...Nov. 5th
Some more TEEPEE fun! This time we asked the grade 8s if they could help us. They did a wonderful job.
Working on a fun letter recognition game.
