January-A little MATH update.

Welcome back everyone! Before the blog starts we would just like to remind you that a new album is on HOMEROOM for January. Should you need the link again please feel free to message through REMIND.
January has begun with plenty of math fun and exploring.

Some of our friends have begun to use the “Rekenrek”.
This wonderful tool was designed by Adrian Treffers, a mathematics curriculum researcher at the Freudenthal Institute in Holland, to support the natural development of number in children. In class we have been using it to demonstrate quantities and some friends have used it to further develop their addition skills.

Sumblox are another fun tool that we have been using to explore number concepts in our classroom. They look like regular building blocks but they aren’t!

As you can see above, we began introducing the Sumblox by exploring quantity and later we challenged students to work on building a tower consisting of numbers 1-10.

These great blocks will be used to assist us in learning addition over the next few weeks. We will be sure to share our learning with you.

Our entire class has been given logins to a program called mPower through TVO.  A few students were introduced to this program in the computer lab. As we introduce students logins will be sent via REMIND to those that are ready so that you can also use this great MATH program at home. We are able to track student progress through our teacher login even if you do it at home.

If you would like to learn more about mPower please take a look at this video:

This great program is directly linked to Ontario curriculum and we hope to have all our student’s on it by the end of the month. We will slowly introduce it a few student’s at a time during our computer lab times.

Some other centers that have been math based have been connected to counting and ordering numbers (even after working on winter words we worked on ordering the pages by using correct numbers).

Please continue to work on the below at home to further enchance learning at school:
*Number recognition
*Quantity
*Adding
*Number ordering (up and down)
*Words that express numbers and writing numbers

November update 😊

It has been a busy November so far. We have been full of prayer, shape knowledge and other fun learning opportunities.

Below are just a few of the fun activities we have been experiencing this month. We learned about praying and that we can do it in many different ways. We read a lovely book and learned that we can all pray at different times and in different ways.

We have enjoyed Christian meditation and reflection along with learning a new morning “Goodmorning Jesus” prayer song.

Christmas concert practice has also begun and we have a great little song about Bethlehem as part of our presentation which you will see in about a month.

We have been doing many fun lessons with shapes and we also received a fun new light board! When using these we have encouraged counting and shape knowledge by all students.

Wow look at all the shapes we found and sorted below!!!

Tangrams have been a HUGE hit!

Using extra packaging materials to be creative and make our shapes has also been plenty of fun.

More tangram challenges...

It was also Remembrance Day and we read a wonderful story as a class and worked on learning about why we wear Poppies. We created lovely poppy art to remember those that we honour on this special day. We made sure to pray respectfully at our ceremony to remember why today we honour peacemakers. The story of David and Goliath helped us learn more about peace through from the Bible.

We had so much fun setting up our slack line and it has been a great way to learn problem solving and the skill of helping one another/working as a team.

Even we the teachers tried balancing on the slack line and our principal too!

Enjoy your weekend everyone.

September drifting away.

Your little ones may be coming home and telling you they are preparing special rocks. We read our prayer rock poem together and learned about how these special rocks will help us pray on a daily basis (poem attached below). You will see these special rocks come home next week when everyone is complete.
We got our interactive board up and running and we LOVED using it together for math lessons on patterns.

We also went on a pattern hunt and used corks to create special patterns to demonstrate our learning in this area of mathematics.
One friend in our class found many patterns on snakes and decided to share them with our class. We had so much fun trying to find all the new patterns.

Many of us have been working really hard on writing in our classroom. We have some very determined year one and two students.

Our Terry Fox walk was a great success and we want to thank one of our families out there for sharing a nice book with us. Here we are having fun on our walk:

REMINDERS:
*Monday is ORANGE SHIRT DAY!
*Library day is always on Wednesday (please make sure you return books Wednesday of each week).
